We all have had those days where we look at the supplements we are taking and really ask ourselves if we think they are actually helping us and are we taking too much or not enough? Sometimes it seems that there are over a million different types of supplements on the market. How do you know which ones to take, how much to take and what brand to take? (Click here for not all Supplements are created equal: how to pick the right type/brand of supplements).
Below are my Focal Five Supplements. I was taught in Chiropractic school about many different supplements (Thanks to a brilliant man, Dr. David Seaman, D.C.), but these are the five that have always stuck with me.
Helps us get the vitamins, minerals and nutritional needs that we are not getting in our Americanized diets.
There are 300 or more bodily reactions that require magnesium in order to function properly. Our muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, and even the discs of our spinal column rely on magnesium in one way or another. Magnesium may help to decrease inflammation, increase ATP (energy) production, aid in DNA repair, and is suggested with the use of calcium.
This vitamin is well known for its benefits in helping us gain stronger bones and decrease osteoporosis risks. Did you know that it is also beneficial for keeping your heart healthy, helping you lose weight and keep it off, and protect you against certain cancers?
CoQ10 is an important vitamin that helps increase ATP (energy) levels and helps protect your heart.
5.Fish oil/Omega 3 fatty acids
Fish oil is an anti-inflammatory vitamin that may help decrease pain levels and inflammation, improve your heart health and protect against cardiovascular diseases, prevent certain forms of cancer, increase your mood and increase your brain power.
All of these vitamins are like the MVP’s that you want on your team. This starting five can do most of the work and the rest of the bench is just needed from time to time. The importance of these vitamins is simple, if you want to live a long and happy life, you need the vitamins that our diets don’t provide (multivitamin), help our bodies to be able to perform reactions quickly and easily (Magnesium), make our bones strong (Calcium), keep the energy levels of our body and its reactions high (CoQ10) and our bodies free from diseases, pain and inflammation (Fish Oil), then you want the Focal Five on your team.
